On a freezing evening in February the young athletes of S Factor Athletics Club were not deterred by the minus temperatures and got on with their training session at Ladywell Arena in the London borough of Lewisham.
Club Secretary Jaishree Solanke expressed her surprise that so many athletes had turned up and commented:
“this is typical of them they come here to meet their friends and mix with kids who go to different schools – we have a real sense of community in this club, the cold won’t stop them!”….
S factor Athletics Academy is a newly formed junior athletics club formed in January 2011 in Lewisham. Started by former international sprinter Lisa Miller the club already has a membership of over 100 young athletes most of who live locally in the borough of Lewisham. Lisa was keen to give young people the opportunity to take part in athletics and potentially reach the level she had experienced herself. Working in local schools she was convinced that there were many young enthusiastic and talented young athletes who would like to train for athletics in a club environment. Within a few months Lisa had the support of a number of coaches and the club was formed. One year later S Factor AC have completed Clubmark.
Club Chair Person Sharon Simpson commented
“Clubmark has been a particularly helpful guide in establishing our club. It has given us the guidance we needed to assure us that we had structured the club in the right way. We knew what to do but this was just good confirmation that everything had been thought of. We (the committee) have worked hard to get this completed as we want the best for the athletes in S Factor Athletics Club.”
CCSO Elspeth Turner presented the Clubmark certificate to S Factor AC at their training venue at Ladywell Arena in Lewisham and congratulated the coaches and committee members on the hard work undertaken in setting up the club and completion of Clubmark accreditation.
